The Hon Mahara Okeroa grew up at Parihaka and he is a mokopuna of survivors of the invasion and ransacking of Parihaka. Mahara was one of the negotiators of the Taranaki iwi settlement (2015) and as a member of Kawe Tutaki, Mahara also had a significant role in achievement a separate settlement for Parihaka in 2017.
